Here is a list of things I see many new web site owners forget to check or do not know to check before launching a site.

Common mistakes:

  • Using the same title / description tags throughout the site. Doing this will
cause you to fall into Google’s Supplemental index.
  • Adding all the keywords for the site on one page in the keyword tag. Only add
keywords the represent that page. Also, never repeat one word more
than 3 times in the key word tag.
  • Too many links on a page.
  • Java script, Image or Flash menus ?Ǩ Avoid these. Use HTML or CSS menus to help the engines find and index your site properly.
  • Framed and Flash sites are still not SEO friendly. Neither are intro pages.
  • Lack of an HTML and XML site map
  • Exchanging links is a good way to build PR. That may have been the case a few years
ago, but not anymore. Stay away from link exchanges if possible. If you
must exchange links , make sure they are related. Linking to unrelated
sites can cause your site to not be fully crawled by Google.
  • Canonicalization ?Ǩ Promote only one version of your url. If each of these were used in
links on the site or to the site, you could split the value of your address
into that many pages. The pages will not be created equally. You can tell
by typing the various urls and or check the page rank. For example, if the www
has PR and so does the non www version you could run into problems with
ranking for the home page. It will also split up your PR. Examples: www.mysite.com -
  • mysite.com/
  • www.mysite.com/index.htm
  • mysite.com/home.asp
  • Dynamic URLs are bad. URLs with many query strings are not recommended.
